23 Things for Professional Development – Thing 1

Posted on June 21, 2011

Like many others in the library-sphere I have signed up to take part in 23 things for professional development (or cpd23 for short). In the words of the organisers, cpd23 is a ‘free online programme open to information professionals at all stages of their career, in all types of role, and anywhere across the world’. Each week a new ‘thing’ will be added to the cpd23 blog for participants to explore. It began yesterday with ‘thing 1’ being to explore blogs and blogging.

I think that cpd23 is an excellent idea as it’s not often that you get to explore and reflect on new tools and ideas within a community of other people doing the same thing! However, what with starting a new job and a looming dissertation deadline I’m not sure how many of the ‘things’ I will have time to do. I will nevertheless be reading others experiences with the ‘things’ and I am sure I will still learn a lot.

So now a little bit about my blog and blogging……………..

I first started reading library blogs during my year as a graduate trainee. I found them interesting and they often opened my eyes to parts of the profession that I’d not come across before. However, I never thought that I would start my own blog I didn’t feel that I had anything to write about that anyone else would want to read. Fast forward a year and I find myself with a blog. I set my blog up as I was coming towards the end of the taught part of my Librarianship MA (as a form of essay avoidance!) – now not only do I have a blog; I have blog posts! This feels like an achievement to me (even if no one is reading it).

Primarily this blog is a reflective tool for me in which I aim to record my thoughts and experiences as I progress through my career in the library sector. Reflection has become important to me since having to compile a reflective journal for one of my MA assignments. I feel that Its importance should not be underestimated. I think we can learn from things we have done well and also things that have not gone to plan no matter what stage you’re at in your career. However, even though this blog is for me it would be nice if along the way I can write blog posts that other people find interesting!

One piece of advice I would give to prospective bloggers is to make sure you google your blog name ideas. I found out after I had set my blog up that if you google ‘lucy librarian’ google also finds an (totally unrealated to me!) erotic novel on amazon with a similar name………..
